  • MATCH REPORT: ROVERS VS WEST ESSEX.

Stanway Rovers 0 – 0 West Essex After the excitement of last Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Enfield, Rovers were abruptly brought back down to earth with a 0-0 draw against mid-table West Essex in a game where they failed to get out of second gear in a frustrating 90 minutes which was low on quality throughout. Rovers were given the perfect opportunity to take the lead inside just two minutes when Ayo Odukoya was upended in the West Essex box and the referee pointed to the spot. The resulting penalty however from Sean Bartlett was far too well advertised and the West Essex keeper made a comfortable save to his left. Bartlett almost made amends on 10 mins when he volleyed home from close range. but the off-side flag went up against Jack Clampin who had headed back across goal to create the chance. The next chance also fell to Rovers when Joel Older found himself on the ball on the left flank and his run and cross found Odukoya who could only shoot straight at the keeper from the middle of the penalty box. That chance was as good as it got for Rovers, as West Essex then dominated the half. Twice they wasted good scoring opportunities by shooting high and wide with just Harry Aldridge to beat, and Aldridge made one exceptional save from point blank range when West Essex looked certain to score following a break. Rovers enjoyed little possession or territory and were perhaps somewhat fortunate to enter half time still level at 0-0 after never threatening after the opening fifteen minutes. Manager Danny Slatter was clearly as displeased as many of the Rovers faithful with the first half showing and made two changes at half time replacing Jordan Barnett and Joel Older with Joe Heron and Lewis Francis. Despite the changes it was West Essex who continued to dominate but against the run of play it was Rovers who had the first clear cut chance when a Crisell effort from 8 yards was deflected out for a corner. Other than an optimistic appeal for a penalty from Lewis Francis, Rovers continued to struggle for any fluency and it was no surprise when Slatter made his third change just 20 minutes into the half with Franchi replacing Bartlett; or indeed any surprise when frustration boiled over and Francis was booked for a needless cynical tackle on the half way line. The game continued to lack any real quality with both teams restricted to half chances and long range efforts, and with West Essex using every opportunity to run down the clock satisfied with picking up a valuable away point Rovers became interesting frustrated. We almost stole it at the death when a Danny Nesbitt header from a Joe Heron corner was tipped over the bar but in truth Rovers didn’t deserve any more than the point they got and were perhaps fortunate to come away with that in a game in which they were no-where near their best.

  • CHAIRMAN'S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN: Monday 23rd March 2020… LOCKDOWN! A seminal point in history from when things would never be the same. At a stroke, although we did not know it at the time, the best part of an entire year’s turnover was to be “written off” because of a worldwide virus – COVID-19. It was to prove an unexpected body blow to the club, both socially and recreationally. Stanway Rovers Football Club is a long-established local institution, now entering its eighth decade. It remains a non-profit-making organisation, entirely community-based, and a valuable community asset. If any reassurance was needed to the bona fide members of the club and all its dependents, then COVID-19 has certainly tested our resolve to the full. I would like to place on record our sincere thanks to all our sponsors, benefactors, volunteers and humble supporters for their kind efforts in helping to keep Rovers afloat during this difficult time. Hopefully, in the new year, we may get back to some form of normality. When we do, I look forward to welcoming you all back to the Hawthorns and catching up with all the old, familiar faces. In the meantime, please respect the COVID-19 guidelines and keep safe. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Dave Jones (Chairman) On behalf of: Andy Partner (SRFC Youth Chairman) Leo King (SRFC Ladies Chairman) Ross Turver (SRFC Girls Chairman) and everyone else at Stanway Rovers Football Club. #WeAreStanway

  • ANDY'S VISION

Words from our new Director of Football: It’s great to be involved in senior football after 15 years with Stanway Rovers YFC as a coach of teams from U7s to U18s – as well as being chairman for the past 11 years. I’m a Stanway lad, so being part of this wonderful club is a real pleasure. My thanks to the club committee for appointing me as Director of Football, and also my best wishes to all at Stanway Rovers Youth as I’m stepping down from my role as chairman and will finish coaching my youngest son’s team at U16s in the coming months. I see the Director of Football role as a continuation of what has been implemented throughout the youth setup during the past 15 years, with a vast number of lads going on to play semi-pro football. Now, under the leadership of Dave Jones and Kevin Mather, there is a clear pathway for players to progress their football careers with Stanway Rovers which (for one reason or another) wasn’t there in the past. We have an excellent management team already in place with manager Danny Slatter, assisted by coaches Adam Munn and Craig Hughes, and my role will be to support those boys whilst putting in place a structure from U13s to U23s which will see some really exciting, talented local lads progress to the first team. We also have a fantastic girls setup that is priming itself for a ladies team so there is a real prospect of Stanway Rovers Ladies playing alongside the men at The Hawthorns in the not too distant future – all of our sides are brimming with local talent which makes that prospect all the more heartening. The message is clear and the outlook is full of potential; I think anybody who knows Stanway Rovers understands that my appointment has signalled a change in the wind. Maybe the sleeping giant has finally awoken? Who knows? There’s a couple of clubs around who could be that, but I firmly believe the combination of our senior sides, our youth setup and the Stanway community makes us a different prospect. Stanway Rovers are capable of being big hitters in the non-league scene; the club can attract key individuals and organisations, and it’s my job to unlock its footballing potential and give it a real go. I’ve received some great support already, and I know that there’s some real diamonds within the club who can help with infrastructure and knowledge. I am always eager to hear opinions as my football background has largely been about that, so I’ll be listening and taking on board the best bits with the mission of driving the club forward. It’s a really exciting time! We have been working on a number of different projects over the past season – all of which will have a positive impact on Stanway Rovers FC. It may look quiet from the outside but, believe me, it’s bustling on the inside! There will be some significant announcements in the near future. It’s fair to say that the new football season will be full of trepidation, with a lot of clubs simply not knowing what the future holds. It makes it incredibly hard to commit to something when you don’t know whether the season is going to finish or whether there will be severe restrictions on your income. As a consequence, we will have to plan carefully with a lot of consideration ahead of the start of the new campaign and we will have to adapt following every piece of news. Have no doubts, though, that Stanway Rovers will be looking to hit the ground running when the 2021-22 season commences. The bigger picture, however, is that we are looking forward to a safe season of football which will enable us to welcome back our growing support base which was up 30% last season, as well as some normality returning to life. The players and the coaching staff can see the brighter days ahead, and we’re all chomping at the bit for a few end-of-season competitive fixtures and the start of the new campaign. Never again should anyone take some green grass, a football and a bit of sunshine for granted! Take care and stay safe, Andy #WeAreStanway #RockOnRovers

  • CLUB STATEMENT: DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Andy Partner as our new Director of Football. Andy has been involved with our club's youth section for the past 15 years and will be stepping down from his position as chairman of Stanway Rovers YFC in order to take up his new role. His main focus will be developing a structure which will stretch from our under 13s right the way through to our first team. Commenting on the appointment, Club Chairman Dave Jones has stated: "Andy has been part of our wonderful youth setup for many years doing management work and much more. This led to him becoming chairman of our youth section and he has since guided our youth to a level that, as a club, we are all so proud of. We have asked Andy to join our ambitious team at senior level as our new Director of Football. I have no doubt that, thanks to his tremendous dedication and knowledge, he will help us to achieve our targets that we are all working towards. Our committee, our management staff and I are very much looking forward to working with Andy. I am hopeful that a great future beckons as soon as the game we all love returns". #WeAreStanway #RockOnRovers
